Deepfake technology is rapidly becoming easier\nand quicker to create and it\u2019s opening a door into a new form of cybercrime. Although\nit\u2019s still mostly seen as relatively harmful or even humorous, this craze could\ntake a more sinister turn in the future and be at the\nheart of political scandals, cybercrime, or even unimaginable concepts\ninvolving fake videos \u2013 and not just on public figures.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A deepfake<\/a> is the\ntechnique of human-image synthesis based on artificial intelligence to create\nfake content either from scratch or using existing\nvideo designed to replicate the look and sound of a real human. Such videos can\nlook incredibly real and currently many of these videos involve celebrities or\npublic figures saying something outrageous or untrue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New research<\/a> shows a huge increase in the\ncreation of deepfake videos, with the number online almost doubling in the last\nnine months alone. Deepfakes are increasing in quality\nat a swift rate, too. This video showing Bill Hader<\/a> morphing effortlessly\nbetween Tom Cruise and Seth Rogan is just one example of how authentic these\nvideos are looking, as well as sounding. If you search YouTube for the term\n\u2018deepfake\u2019 it will make you realize we are viewing the tip of the iceberg as to\nwhat is to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\nfact, we have already seen deepfake technology used for fraud, where a\ndeepfaked voice was reportedly used to scam a CEO out of a large\nsum of cash<\/a>. It is believed the CEO of an unnamed\nUK firm thought he was on the phone to his boss and followed the orders to\nimmediately transfer \u20ac220,000 (roughly US$244,000) to a Hungarian supplier\u2019s\nbank account. If it was this easy to influence someone by just asking them to\ndo it over the phone, then surely we will need better security in place to\nmitigate this threat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fooling the naked eye<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We have also seen apps making DeepNudes\nwhere apps were able to turn any clothed person into a topless photo in\nseconds. Although, luckily, this particular app has now been taken\noffline<\/a>, what if this comes back in another form with a vengeance and is\nable to create convincingly authentic-looking video?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\nis also evidence that the production of these videos is becoming a lucrative\nbusiness especially in the pornography industry. The BBC<\/a> says \u201c96% of these videos are of female celebrities having their likenesses\nswapped into sexually explicit videos \u2013 without their knowledge or consent\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A recent\nCalifornian bill<\/a> has taken a leap of faith and made it illegal to create a\npornographic deepfake of someone without their consent with a penalty of up to\n$150,000. But chances are that no legislation will be enough to deter some\npeople from fabricating the videos. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To be sure, an article from The\nEconomist<\/a> discusses that in order to make a convincing enough deepfake you\nwould need a serious amount of video footage and\/or voice recordings in order\nto make even a short deepfake clip. I desperately wanted to create a deepfake\nof myself but sadly, without many hours of footage of myself, I wasn\u2019t able to\nmake a deepfake of my face. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having said that, In the not-too-distant\nfuture, it may be entirely possible to take just a few short Instagram stories\nto create a deepfake that is believed by the majority of their followers online\nor by anyone else who knows them. We may see some unimaginable videos appearing\nof people closer to home \u2013 the boss, our colleagues, our peers, our family. Additionally,\ndeepfakes may also be used for bullying in schools, the office or even further\nafield. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, cybercriminals will definitely\nuse such technology to spearphish<\/a>\nvictims. Deepfakes keep getting cheaper to create and become near-impossible to\ndetect with the human eye alone. As a result, alt that fakery could very easily\nmuddy the water between fact and fiction, which in turn could force us to not\ntrust anything \u2013 even when presented with what our senses are telling us to\nbelieve. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heading off the very real threat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

So, what can be done to prepare us for this\nthreat? First, we need to better educate people that deepfakes exist, how they\nwork and the potential damage they can cause. We will all need to learn to\ntreat even the most realistic videos we see that they could be a total\nfabrication. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secondly, technology desperately needs to\ndevelop better detection of deepfakes. There is already research\ngoing into it<\/a>, but it\u2019s nowhere near where it should be yet. Although\nmachine learning is at the heart of creating them in the first place, there\nneeds to be something in place that acts as the antidote being able to detect\nthem without relying on human eyes alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, social media platforms need to\nrealize there is a huge potential threat with the impact of deepfakes because\nwhen you mix a shocking video with social media, the outcome tends to spread\nvery rapidly and potentially could have a detrimental impact on society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t get me wrong; I hugely enjoy the\ndevelopment in technology and watching it unfold in front of my eyes, however,\nwe must remain aware of how technology can sometimes detrimentally affect us,\nespecially when machine learning is maturing at a rate quicker than ever before.\nOtherwise, we will soon see deepfakes become deepnorms with far-reaching effects.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
