This year\u2019s\nSocial Media Day is taking place on Sunday 30 June and aims to \u2018recognize and\ncelebrate social media\u2019s impact on global communication\u2019. It\u2019s true that nowadays\nsocial media is right at the centre of the interchange between human minds and\nbrings a whole host of attendant benefits. However, as with any great\nadvancement, there are some risks we should all be aware of \u2013 particularly with\nrespect to cybersecurity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite\nthe success of LinkedIn, generally seen as \u2018a social network for professionals\u2019,\nwe tend to focus on social media as an individual\u2019s pastime and something that\nis part of our personal lives. The truth is, though, that there are risks all\nbusinesses should be aware of, so read on and learn about how to protect your\ncompany with regard to social media. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The\npossibilities of social engineering<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A\nrecent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/christieterrill\/2017\/04\/28\/what-you-need-to-know-now-about-cybersecurity-and-social-media\/#46d1675a3a16\">Forbes\narticle<\/a> discussed how black hat hackers will often use social media\nas a tool to learn more about potential targets in order to create the perfect\nattack. Forbes gave the case scenario of an employee publicly tweeting about\nattending a certain business event. In this scenario, a hacker can search for\nthe employee\u2019s contact details through LinkedIn, cross-reference that data to the\ntweet about the business event, and finally craft a perfectly targeted phishing\nemail with a malicious link. Even the most naive individuals are likely to\nlaugh off an email from a wealthy prince offering a treasure trove of riches,\nbut if an email is customized to the recipient, it is far more likely to be\ntrusted. The key thing here is education. Every company should ensure their\nemployees are aware of their privacy settings and how to protect their safety\nonline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dangers\naround unattended social media accounts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every\nbusiness has minor pain points where they know they should be doing more, and\nperhaps for some their social media strategy is not on its A-game. However,\neven if the frequency of your company\u2019s posts is slipping, it\u2019s hugely\nimportant not to leave these accounts entirely unattended.&nbsp; There have been incidents of hackers breaking\ninto dormant corporate accounts that have been left abandoned, and then using\nthose accounts to spread malware. Make sure that your company is looking after\nits accounts, and remember to keep tabs on who has the login information. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Phishing\nattacks and scams<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While\nbusinesses may like to think their employees are working solidly for the eight\nhours they spend at their desks, the likelihood is that employees are\noccasionally checking in to see how many likes their latest personal Facebook\npost achieved. Furthermore, at most businesses, employees have the right to\ntake a look at their social media accounts on a lunch break. Businesses must\naccept employees checking personal accounts as par for the course and take\nappropriate precautions around some of the risks. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hootsuite.com\/social-media-security-for-business\/\">Hootsuite<\/a>\nincludes guidance on a number of social media scams out there that may appear\nas normal posts, perhaps a videos or memes, but that actually direct users to malicious\ncontent. For example, the link might send users to a page that claims that their\ncomputer has been locked and asks the user to provide a phone number or other\ndetails to receive support. However, in this case the phone line actually goes\nthrough to scammers looking for credit card numbers or personal information.\nWhile this may not directly affect the business, there could be a chance of\nmalware being loaded on to company computers. So it\u2019s important, as ever, to\neducate and give guidance to employees about social media use in the workplace.\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vast majority of individuals and businesses are enjoying the positive benefits and endless opportunities that social media has brought.
