We no longer see it as simply the mother\u2019s\njob to care for and provide all the care for a child, while the father brings\nhome the bacon. Fathers are taking an increasingly active role in their\nchildren\u2019s upbringing and, as the conversation turns to how we can protect our\nkids online, ESET has put together its top tips to help dads stay ahead of the\ncybersecurity curve this Father\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With society\nrapidly migrating online, even toddlers can be well adept in handling a\ncomputer and playing games on the internet. While our kids are lucky to grow up\nin a world where they have access to information at their fingertips, there are\nrisks that all children and parents need to be aware of. So, what kind of\ntopics should fathers be talking to their kids about?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Password protections: <\/strong>Protecting personal information is vital for\nonline safety. Fathers should talk to their kids about the importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welivesecurity.com\/2019\/01\/08\/new-years-resolutions-passwords-shipshape\/\">secure\npasswords<\/a> \u2013 as we know, \u2018Password123\u2019 doesn\u2019t cut it anymore! <\/li><li><strong>Online stranger danger: <\/strong>Fathers may think to\nremind their kids of \u201cstranger danger\u201d in real life, but the same holds true\nfor the online world. Guide your children through their online privacy practices\nand explain to them what they mean. It\u2019s also important to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welivesecurity.com\/2017\/06\/01\/generation-connected-kids\/\">make\nsure your kids follow certain rules<\/a>, such as only speaking to people\nonline if they know them in real life. And, even if it is someone they know,\nfathers should teach their kids to be wary of fake profiles and the fact that\npeople may not be who they say they are.<\/li><li><strong>Malware: <\/strong>We hear about\nmalware relentlessly in the media and it may seem like a big scary word.\nHowever, there are simple steps that every family, including the children, can\ntake to protect themselves. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welivesecurity.com\/2016\/02\/24\/porn-clicker-trojans-google-play-analysis\/\">when\ndownloading new programs<\/a>, dads should teach their children to use\nofficial websites of the content instead of any third-party sites. It\u2019s also\nimportant to teach kids to stop and think before clicking on links \u2013 some of\nwhich can be deceptive and, particularly in online games, can lead to racking\nup hefty bills on the family\u2019s credit card by clicking and purchasing various in-game\nitems. <\/li><li><strong>Creating a two-way relationship: <\/strong>Depending on the age\nof your child, they may think they know a whole lot more about the digital\nsphere than you. If they want a social media account that you don\u2019t feel\nthey\u2019re ready for, don\u2019t just say \u2018no\u2019 but start a discussion. Be sure to\nlisten to their view while also explaining that, while you may know less about\nhow Instagram works, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welivesecurity.com\/2016\/06\/01\/childrens-day-advice-risks-looming-cyberspace\/\">you\ndo have a better understanding of some of the risks<\/a>. Fathers are\nmore likely to have an influence on their children when there is a trusting\ntwo-way relationship and where children feel they\u2019re able to voice their ideas\nwithout being dictated to. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Being a dad is no easy job and, as a parent generally, there seems to be a constant stream of new risks to stay on top of.
